 |
Only the presence of a licensed guide who is prepared and
skillful, who has good organisational capacity and
expressive and communication skills and the knowledge of at
least one foreign language, can be a guarantee for a
successful excursion or guided visit.

WHAT DOES “LICENSED GUIDE”
MEAN?
All above mentioned characteristics are tested during a
provincial examination which every guide must pass. Only then
the real work starts; research, studies, up-date courses; all
this to guarantee quality. This is made possible by the fact
that a guide works in a limited territory (one or more provinces). |

 |
HOW TO RECOGNISE A LICENSED GUIDE?
This is easy. You only need to check if he/she has a badge
which mentions: name, last name, the provincial registration
number, the languages for which he/she is licensed and the
territory for which the license is valid.
Thanks to this badge, fines are avoided. |

WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY?
"A guide is a person who for profession assists individuals or
groups of persons during the visit to works of art, museums,
galleries and archaeological sites and gives explanations on the
historical, artistic, monumental, environmental and natural
aspects. The license for this profession is valid for a
provincial territory.” (D.G.R. nr. 58-5344 of 18-02-2002) |

It is not always easy to distinguish between the
different tourist professions in Italy. The most important
differences are:
|
 |
The tour leader or tour
manager distinguishes himself from a guide by the fact that
he assists individuals or groups of persons from the place of
departure until the end of the tour (whereas the guide cannot go
outside his territory, this is to improve a profound knowledge)
and he deals with practical matters (hotels, restaurants,
different services and problems that can arise). |
| |
|
 |
He can give tourist information on the sites
they pass, outside the competence of the guide, but he
cannot explain anything once he is outside the bus: this is the
task of the guide. |
| |
|
 |
The nature or environmental guide
however assists individuals or groups of persons during the
visit to natural areas and gives explanations. He has no
historical-artistic education. |
